<h2 style="text-align: center;">Inaugural Irmo Neighbors Helping Neighbors Food Drive</h2><p style="text-align: center;">When Congressional gridlock shut down the government, it prevented families in need from accessing their SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) benefits. Julie saw the need in her community. She launched Irmo Neighbors Helping Neighbors and held their first food drive on November 2, 2025. The community came out to support! <h4>Testimony Against H.4764</h4><p>On February 17, 2026, Julie testified against H.4764. This bill would compel local law enforcement to enter into agreements with ICE which would erode trust between communities and law enforcement and make our communities less safe.</p>

<p>After the unlawful shooting and killings of Alex Pretti and Renee Good, Julie knew that she had to rally her neighbors to stand in solidarity with the resistance movement in Minnesota. More than 75 of our neighbors came to show their support for the rule of law and against the unlawful practices of Immigrations and Customs Enforcement.</p>

<h2>Welcome SCDP Delegates, Alternates, and Guests</h2><p></p><p>My name is Julie Zimmerman, and I’m the Democratic nominee for House District 71, which stretches from Irmo and Ballentine to Chapin across both Richland and Lexington counties.</p><p>I’m a lifelong South Carolinian, licensed therapist, mother, and community advocate who has proudly called Irmo home for nearly 30 years.</p><p>I was raised by two public school teachers and my daddy coached football for 43 years in SC. I learned early the importance of hard work, service, and showing up for others. I am a proud product of South Carolina public schools</p><p>I started working at just 14 years old in a peach packing shed in Johnston, South Carolina so I could afford things like cheerleading camp and track shoes. I attended college with the help of student loans and Pell Grants while working part-time jobs and volunteering in my community. I understand the tough decisions families make every day and the hard work it takes to get by.</p><p>I later built an 18-year career in straight-commission sales before becoming a licensed therapist, where I now help people learn to solve problems and navigate life's challenges.</p><p>This past week, we saw what happens when people use the power of their vote. Taxpayers will not be footing the bill for a process that would have cost millions of dollars. The special session alone cost taxpayers roughly $85,000 per day and created added strain and stress for South Carolinians while an election was already underway.</p><p>The early vote totals also send an important message: our communities are paying attention and we demand better.</p><p>South Carolinians deserve better and that is why I am running. Folks are facing rising costs, underfunded schools, lack of mental health care, closing of rural hospitals, and government decisions that too often feel disconnected from the people they impact.</p><p>Now is the time for people to mobilize, organize, and vote.</p><p>I’m running because I want to be part of the solution to the problems facing everyday South Carolinians. Enough wasting time and money on political distractions or decisions driven by Washington, DC, or by politicians who have forgotten why they were elected in the first place.</p><p>We don’t just need moments of victory. With an 18-year career in straight-commission sales and now as a licensed therapist (LPC) in South Carolina, she brings a unique understanding of the pressures working families face because she has lived them herself.</p>

Her grandfather served on the Spartanburg County School Board and worked as an ophthalmologist, while her grandmother was a public school teacher. On her mother’s side, Julie’s Nana worked as a nurse’s aide, and her Granddaddy helped start the first volunteer fire department in Scranton, South Carolina. Together, they served their community as youth and church leaders throughout their lives. This legacy of service shaped Julie’s work ethic, compassion, and lifelong commitment to helping others.</p>

<p>Julie has called District 71 home for nearly 25 years. During that time, she has raised her daughter here, built deep community ties, and witnessed firsthand the changes, challenges, and opportunities facing local families. Some of her most meaningful memories were made right here; teaching her daughter to drive along the rural roads around Chapin and Lake Murray, watching sunsets at the Ballentine marina, and developing a deep appreciation for the land, water, and sense of peace that define this special part of South Carolina.</p>

Julie’s family on her Nana’s side, the Bouknights, settled and helped found the Dutch Fork area in 1781 after immigrating from Germany. Her Nana grew up in Irmo and graduated from Irmo High School, where Irmo Elementary now stands. With generational roots in District 71, Julie has always felt a connection to the land and the people. Today, after nearly 25 years of raising her daughter and being an active part of the community, Julie understands the realities families in District 71 face because she lives them every day.</p>

She later got her Master's Degree in in Clinical Mental Heath from South University. She believes deeply in the power of public education and that every child, regardless of economic status deserves access to a quality education, because education is the path to opportunity.</p><p>Julie learned the values of hard work and service early in life. As a child, she picked peanuts and vegetables with her granddaddy to share with neighbors in need. She later volunteered with Meals on Wheels in Florence County, The Cumbee Center, a domestic violence shelter in Aiken, South Carolina, and worked at Helping Hands, a home for children in the foster care system while attending college in Aiken. These experiences instilled what Julie calls her “helper’s heart.”&nbsp;</p>

She supports well-established South Carolina programs that improve student outcomes, including school-based mental health services; pupil services programs, early intervention frameworks, and trauma-informed professional development for teachers.</p><p>In the House, Julie will also fight to expand healthcare access by integrating mental health into everyday care. She supports funding community clinics in District 71 to embed counselors and care coordinators alongside primary care, so families can get help for both mind and body in one place, without long waits or unnecessary barriers.</p><p>Julie is a dedicated supporter of the arts in public schools and the community. Her daughter attended Lexington–Richland 5 schools, where Julie supported her involvement in district chorus and the performing arts from elementary school through high school. Julie volunteered as a chorus chaperone on trips to Florida and Washington, D.C., and helped raise funds for her daughter’s high school performing arts programs. She continues to support the arts locally through her involvement with the Greater Irmo Arts Guild and the Irmo Christmas Parade, and she looks forward to becoming an official member of the Greater Irmo Arts Guild in 2026.</p>

Families across District 71 began to worry about how they were going to feed their children. Julie understands this struggle because growing up, there were times when her family faced the same worries. Believing that access to food should never be used as a political tool and that no one should go hungry, Julie organized food and supply drives throughout the district in October and November. She founded Neighbors Helping Neighbors, a community action group that partnered with organizations like Sharing God’s Love and Senior Services at Seven Oaks Park. Together with volunteers, Neighbors Helping Neighbors hosted a Joy of Giving Drive that supported families and benefited the following organizations: Gifts for Grands, Epworth Children’s Home, Sharing God's Love, Macedonia Baptist Church, Senior Services at Seven Oaks Park, and Palmetto Place. The Joy of Giving Drive, held in December 2025. This event became a powerful example of what a community can accomplish when it comes together.</p><p>Julie leads with both empathy and strength. She believes differences are not barriers, but opportunities to build understanding and bring people together. She is a strong advocate for the rights of families and individuals to make their own decisions about their lives, their health, and their futures. Inspired by the lessons she learned growing up in Florence, Clarendon, and Saluda counties and by the grit her father instilled in her as a football coach, Julie will bring that same determination to the Statehouse.</p>

They call for everyone in the community to join before</p><p>ICE’s overreach and brutal behavior become the menace to our community that they have to Minneapolis.</p><p>“Enough is enough,” said protest organizer and Democratic candidate for House District 71 Julie Zimmerman. “ICE and the Department of Homeland Security have become an occupying force in this country. After the murder of three American citizens and unnamed countless immigrants, enough is enough. We have untrained, armed agents roaming our streets kidnapping children and adults, sending them to detention centers to never be heard from again, separating families, and destroying the fabric of the America I was raised to believe in. The politicians in the state and in DC need to understand, we want ICE out of our communities now.</p><p>“As a proud American,” Zimmerman continues, “I know I have an obligation to stand up to a tyrannical government and that is exactly what we are seeing.
